Polk County was established in 1844
and named in honor of president-elect James Polk. Located on the
Arkansas-Oklahoma border, much of the county lies within the Ouachita
National Forest, which is the South’s oldest and largest national
forest at 1.5 million acres. The Ouachita’s Talimena Scenic Byway
winds over 2,700 foot Rich Mountain which is part of the highest
mountain range between the Appalachians and the Rockies. Queen
Wilhelmina State Park, found along the Byway in Polk County, atop
Rich Mountain, and is one of the most profitable state parks in
Arkansas.
When workers began laying tracks
through Polk County in the mid-1890s, “railroad towns” sprang up
and older settlements relocated along the right-of-way. Although
some town names have change, present day communities in Polk County
include Cove, Grannis, Hatfield, Mena
(the county seat), Vandervoort, and Wickes.
