About the
Bi-State Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)
The
Bi-State Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is a federally
mandated transportation planning organization for the Fort Smith/Van
Buren urban area of 115,000 population - the 1962 Highway Act
required that urban transportation planning be comprehensively
undertaken and implemented through a cooperative and continuous
process among federal, state, and local governmental agencies
for urban areas of 50,000 population or more. The work of the
MPO may take many forms from helping residents of a given community
or area to determine their transportation needs, to stimulating
local interest in meeting those needs, to advising local residents
on how best to obtain the money necessary to accomplish their
goal of providing for a balanced transportation system.
